Living in rural Texas, I know snakes. Most of them are harmless, but the warm weather always brings with it the threat of rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. A coiled snake could just be resting – or it could be ready to strike. But snakes are a vital part of the ecosystem and have been used as totems for thousands of years.
