Monkey Island

This was inspired by an actual island in Florida where wild (protected) monkeys live. This was my first “scene” (rather than a single image) and went through many changes; it took about three weeks to complete.

There are seven monkeys hidden in the Mother Tree (Earth) and Fire bursts from her head; she holds the moon in her hand (Air), and is surrounded by Water.

There are also various tree spirits and playful things in the branches, and the words “live wild” are written in the roots.

At one point, the design was used by a company that laser engraves images onto leather wallets. I think it turned out well, despite the small size.
