Cherry Blossom Bonsai

This is the first in a series of bonsai trees.

It’s painted on handmade 6x8″ paper, and took about 15 hours to complete.

This time I did manage to count the dots in the soil (the black dots between the green of the pot and the brown trunk) and found that there are 841 black dots for the soil alone. It doesn’t look like there are that many but I was focused on getting it right.

So each bonsai tree must be in the area of tens of thousands of dots.

I also experimented with a smaller implement – a 3/4″ wall nail in order to make the dots smaller. But as you can see in the below photos, it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. The result was “slashy” and inconsistent.

Since then I’ve gone back to sharpened toothpicks which work just fine.
