Blue and Brown Deco Owl

Owls have long been revered for their stoic beauty and prowess.

Symbolically, the Owl can represent wisdom, darkness (as in hidden spirituality), and the ability to see through adversity, among many other things. And of course, they’re also gorgeous and mysterious creatures and are wonderful to have as a totem or spirit animal.

Owl is approximately 7″ tall, created entirely by hand. Rawhide is extremely stiff, so in order to shape it, it has to soak in water for at least 5 or 6 hours. Then it can be cut, shaped, dried, and filled. Natural rawhide looks beautiful when shaped and dried – it retains wrinkles and grooves that give it a deeply grounded feel.

The slightly golden rawhide is painted in the spirit of traditional henna, with a dash of art deco in the structure. This is the first time I’ve ever used two paints together; the turquoise and brown complement each other wonderfully. All the paints I use are specific for leather and I finish them with a leather sealant to protect their beauty for years to come.

Inside Owl is a mixture of seeds, beans, rice, and teeny rocks that strike sharply against the rawhide, creating a wonderful and very individual sound. Like the individuality of the paintings, no two rattles ever sound the same and this one is very distinct. At the tail are two tiny bells which give Owl a discreet and mysterious energetic undertone.
